Frequently Asked Questions

When is baby ready to start BLW?

Around 6 months, when baby can sit up with support and shows interest in food.

How much should baby eat at start?

Just a few bites—milk (breastmilk/formula) is still the main source of nutrition until age 1.

Watch baby’s cues:

Lean forwards/open mouth = more

Turn away/close mouth = done

What if baby gags a lot?

Gagging is common and protects against choking. Stay calm—Baby will improve with practice.

True choking (silent, blue, unable to breathe) is an emergency — call 911.

How do I introduce allergens safely?

Offer one new allergen at a time, in small amounts, and watch closely for reactions.

  • Mild reactions may look like rash or vomiting; severe ones include swelling or trouble breathing — call 911 immediately.
Can I mix purées with BLW?

Yes. BLW doesn’t mean avoiding purées — it’s about letting baby self-feed. You can offer purées on a pre-loaded spoon while also serving soft finger foods. This approach is called responsive feeding and is perfectly safe.
